This year’s speaker, Professor Tyrone Howard, engaged the community in a conversation that affirms teachers’ experiences and promotes and centers critical wellness.

Bookclub Discussion

Featuring Cal Poly Pomona Sociology Professor and Ford Foundation Fellow Dr. Anthony Ocampo, whose research and writing center race, immigration, and LGBTQ rights. The event features a discussion of his monographs centered on interviews that chronicle the way immigrants and their children attempt to carve out their place within American society. The discussion also considers how students have navigated Southern California high school classrooms. The discussion is based off of Dr. Ocampos’s two books: The Latinos of Asia: How Filipino Americans Break the Rules of Race and To Be Brown and Gay in LA: Race and Sexuality in the Immigrant City.

A Talk with Teachers

Featuring Jeff Duncan-Andrade, Professor of Latina/o Studies and Race and Resistance Studies at San Francisco State University. The event, held on Nov. 18, featured a Q&A discussion to consider how to foster humanizing pedagogical practices in the classroom both during and after remote instruction. The discussion was moderated by Dr. Elizabeth van Es and Dr. Nicole Gilbertson, the leadership of the Teacher Academy, and second-year doctoral student Jonathan Montoya.

Teaching for Justice Conference: A Spotlight on Teaching Asian American Studies Across the Curriculum

For social justice to be integrated and sustained in public education, we must build local partnerships that empower and prepare teachers to implement Asian American Studies in the classroom. After nearly a year of conversations and collaborations between K-12 educators in Orange County, faculty and staff at UC Irvine, and education experts across California, the inaugural Teaching for Justice two-day conference was held in April 2022 at the University of California Irvine.

Transforming Science Teaching Planning for the Post-COVID "New Normal"

The UCI Teacher Academy and UCI CalTeach present “Transforming Science Teaching: Planning for the Post-COVID “New Normal.”  This learning sequence brings together science education leaders from across the country to share, discuss, reflect and dream about improving science instruction for social justice. The COVID pandemic amplified existing inequities, and we must take action individually and collectively to address them. Each session will last approximately 90 minutes and include a presentation and opportunities to work in small groups to plan for action.
