Teaching for Justice
Bridging Communities for AAPI Belonging and Well-Being
A two-day conference intended for K-12 educators and those interested in integrating the principles of Asian American and Pacific Islander Studies into their professional work.
“You cannot change any society unless you take responsibility for it, unless you see yourself as belonging to it and responsible for changing it.”
– Grace Lee Boggs
Welcome to our second year of Teaching for Justice (TfJ)! We invite K-12 educators and community members to join us in cultivating Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) belonging and well-being.
In 2022, hundreds of educators joined us to learn and celebrate Asian American history and stories of joy, resilience, and solidarity at our Teaching Asian American Studies Across the Curriculum conference. Teaching for Justice is building upon last year’s focus and will deepen our commitment with our 2023 spotlight: Bridging Communities for AAPI Belonging and Well-Being.
Teaching for Justice is an intentionally-designed space for K-12 educators who seek to be in conversation and collaboration with one another. We highlight pedagogy, research, practice, community-based initiatives and programs that center AAPI experiences, which guide us in taking better care of each other. We strive to foster and deepen our individual connections, while bridging our respective communities. TfJ aims to nurture meaningful opportunities for participants to build capacity in implementing social justice-oriented AAPI Studies instruction. With the three tenets of deepening content knowledge, supporting classroom implementation and advancing advocacy, the two-day conference will be held virtually for the first day and on campus at UCI on the second day. Collaborative partnerships empower and support all teachers. We welcome everyone to join us in celebrating AAPI stories of joy and solidarity that are part of our shared history. We look forward to learning, sharing and growing together.
Guiding Questions:
• How has belonging manifested in AAPI communities in the past and today? How does it impact our well-being?
• How can we cultivate communities in which AAPI belong and thrive?
